On 12 April 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space aboard Vostok 1. The spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and completed a single orbit of Earth, lasting 108 minutes.
This achievement marked a major milestone in the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States, showcasing Soviet advancements in rocketry and space technology. Gagarin’s flight was not only a triumph of engineering but also a symbol of human exploration beyond Earth. His famous words, “Poyekhali!” (“Let’s go!”), became a rallying cry for the space age.
The mission cemented Gagarin as a global hero and propelled the Soviet Union into the forefront of space exploration during the early 1960s. Today, Cosmonautics Day (12 April) is celebrated annually in Russia and many other countries to honour this achievement.
