On 16 June 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova made history as the first woman to travel into space. Flying aboard Vostok 6, she orbited Earth 48 times over the course of almost three days in space.
Her mission was not only a remarkable human achievement but also a powerful political and cultural statement during the height of the Space Race. Tereshkova’s successful flight demonstrated that women could endure the physical and psychological challenges of space travel, paving the way for future female astronauts across the globe.
Her call sign was “Chaika” (“Seagull”), and she remains a celebrated figure in space history, symbolising both Soviet space triumphs and the broader progress of women in science and exploration. Today, her name stands alongside Yuri Gagarin’s as one of the most iconic pioneers of human spaceflight.
