On 18 March 1965, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first human to perform a spacewalk, stepping outside his spacecraft Voskhod 2. Connected to the spacecraft by a 5.35-metre (17.5 ft) tether, Leonov spent about 12 minutes floating in open space, making history as the pioneer of extravehicular activity (EVA).
The mission was not without danger — Leonov’s spacesuit ballooned in the vacuum of space, making it difficult to re-enter the airlock. He had to manually release pressure from the suit to squeeze back inside, narrowly avoiding disaster.
Leonov’s successful EVA marked a major milestone in human space exploration, proving that astronauts could work outside spacecraft — a capability essential for future missions to the Moon, the International Space Station, and beyond. His bravery and innovation cemented him as one of the great pioneers of spaceflight.
