On 14 July 1965, NASA’s Mariner 4 became the first spacecraft to successfully fly by Mars, marking a turning point in planetary exploration. Launched on 28 November 1964, Mariner 4 travelled over 325 million kilometers before passing within 9,846 kilometers (6,118 miles) of the Red Planet.
The probe transmitted 21 groundbreaking images, the first close-up photographs of another planet ever returned to Earth. These images revealed a barren, cratered Martian surface, challenging earlier expectations that Mars might be more Earth-like.
Mariner 4’s success provided humanity with its first real glimpse of Mars and demonstrated NASA’s ability to conduct deep space missions. It remains a milestone in the history of space exploration, paving the way for all future robotic and crewed missions to the Red Planet.
