The Gemini Program (1961–1966) was NASA’s second human spaceflight program, following Mercury and preceding Apollo. Designed to test the techniques needed for a future Moon landing, Gemini missions achieved critical firsts in space exploration.

In 1966, the program reached its peak with missions that included long-duration flights, complex spacewalks (EVAs), and the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. These accomplishments gave NASA the confidence and experience required for Apollo’s eventual lunar missions.

The Gemini spacecraft could carry two astronauts, unlike Mercury’s single-seat design, and was a technological leap forward. It trained a new generation of astronauts, many of whom later became central to Apollo’s success, including Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

The Gemini Program remains one of the most important stepping stones in space history, bridging the gap between America’s early spaceflights and the triumph of landing humans on the Moon.
