On 24 April 1967, tragedy struck the Soviet space program when Soyuz 1 crashed during re-entry, killing cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov.
Launched on 23 April, Soyuz 1 was plagued by technical issues from the start, including faulty solar panels that limited power supply and unstable flight controls. Despite these problems, the mission continued. On re-entry, the parachute system failed, causing the capsule to slam into the ground at high speed.
Komarov became the first human to die during a spaceflight mission. His death highlighted the risks of pushing forward under political pressure during the height of the Space Race.
The Soyuz 1 disaster led to major design overhauls in the Soyuz program, which, despite this tragic beginning, went on to become the longest-running and most reliable spacecraft series in history.
