By the mid-1990s, as authorities cracked down on outdoor festivals and massive free raves, the UK’s dance scene retreated deeper underground. Abandoned warehouses, disused factories, and hidden bunkers became the new temples of sound, where ravers gathered away from police surveillance. This artwork, Acid Bunker 1995, captures the raw intensity of those secret gatherings. A cracked and glowing acid smiley — the enduring symbol of rave culture — drips molten energy over a euphoric crowd, representing both the resilience and fragility of the scene during this era. Surrounded by speaker stacks, graffiti, and neon grids, the bunker setting reflects the do-it-yourself ethos of rave organisers, who transformed forgotten spaces into sanctuaries of bass, light, and liberation. These underground parties embodied defiance: a generation refusing to let their music, freedom, and unity be extinguished.
