The Castlemorton Common Festival of 1992 was a defining moment in UK rave history, remembered as the largest illegal rave ever held on British soil. Attracting an estimated 20,000–40,000 ravers, it was organised by sound systems including Spiral Tribe and DIY, who set up for an entire week on common land in Worcestershire. The event became a flashpoint in the clash between free party culture and the authorities, with police unable to shut it down due to its sheer scale. The fallout from Castlemorton directly influenced the drafting of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which sought to outlaw gatherings featuring “music characterised by repetitive beats.” This artwork captures the raw energy and defiance of the event: cars lining the horizon, towering speaker stacks firing outlaw frequencies into the night, ravers united under the iconic cracked smiley, and riot police facing neon-lit resistance. A moment of chaos that rewrote cultural history.
